Meeting between Donald Tusk and Ursula von der Leyen
On August 31 this year, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the border with Belarus, despite warnings from security services. This was reported by Polish radio station RMF 24.
It is reported that the politicians had a meeting in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, located on the border between Poland and Belarus. In a speech to the press, Tusk stressed that the politicians were advised to change the location of the meeting due to the fact that armed Belarusian soldiers were seen on the other side of the border.
,,We are here to demonstrate true European determination. And we survived!”, Tusk said.
Von der Leyen, for her part, announced that the new multiannual budget of the European Union (EU) foresees tripling investments in border management and migration, with additional funds for states that have direct borders with Russia and Belarus.
,,Poland’s borders also belong to the whole of Europe and it is our common responsibility to protect them. We also have a clear roadmap and that we will do our utmost to obtain the support of the United States,” she said.
The European Commission also proposes a tenfold increase in funding for military mobility and a fivefold increase in defense investment. A key element is the SAFE regulation, through which the EU has already mobilized 150 billion euros for arms purchases to protect the continent.
