Political tensions between the UK and the US

The UK refuses to join the war against Iran, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in an interview with Sky News.

The politician reported serious disagreements with US President Donald Trump on the war against Iran. The British Prime Minister stressed that London does not intend to engage in a direct military conflict with Tehran.

,,We will not give in to this pressure and we will act in the national interest of our country’’, Starmer stressed.

In turn, Labour MP Matt Western said that although the UK’s deep dependence on security guarantees has a long history, the British need a clear plan to protect themselves on their own.

Earlier, Trump, in the presence of G7 leaders, told the Prime Minister that he no longer needed London’s help in the Middle East conflict.

,,They should have given us this (access to British military bases for strikes on Iran) before the war started. It’s far too late now’’, the White House chief told Starmer in a phone call.

Trump was referring to the British prime minister’s initial refusal to grant access to the bases. London had changed its position after the conflict spread to other countries in the region.

On March 3 this year, the American leader expressed his dissatisfaction with the United States’ military cooperation with Britain amid the conflict with Iran. Trump said he was ,,not happy’’ with London’s foreign policy and harshly criticized Starmer, stressing that he was ,,not a Winston Churchill’’.
