Iran offers EU and Ukraine mediation in negotiations with Russia
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that Iran is willing to make efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
The minister said that, before flying to Moscow on March 29, to talk with Russian officials about the nuclear agreement with Tehran, he told the head of the European Union’s foreign policy service Josep Borell, but also the Ukrainian foreign minister Dmitri Kuleba, that he is ready to mediate in the negotiations with the Russian side.
,,We can continue the efforts at the presidential level and at the level of the foreign ministers to establish peace, tranquility and end the war, hoping that optimal results will be obtained in this way’’, the Iranian diplomat said.
He also emphasized that Iran has always supported a peaceful resolution of the conflict and that Western countries are only making the situation in Ukraine more difficult by continuing to supply weapons to Kiev.
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart in Moscow that NATO member states have been participating in the war in Ukraine for a long time and, in fact, are fighting on the side of this country.
,,NATO members were recklessly drawn into the conflict and, in my opinion, are sinking into these tensions quite quickly’’, Lavrov said.
However, the Russian foreign minister previously said that despite the West’s dirty campaign to ,,isolate Russia from the international community’’, the country still has enough friends around the world, especially in Europe.
