Russia has talked about plans to admit potential candidates to BRICS
BRICS plans to agree on a list of candidates for the status of partner countries for the upcoming summit in Kazan in October next year. The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergei Ryabkov, stated this at the plenary session of the 6th International Forum ,,Russia and Ibero-America in a Turbulent World: History and Modernity’’ from Saint-Petersburg University.
,,Following the decisions of the Johannesburg summit, work is being done to develop agreements with new partner states, which should become full members as soon as possible. The list of potential candidates is planned to be agreed upon by the October 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan. We do not rule out that a number of countries from Latin America are also going to be on the list’’, said Ryabkov.
The diplomat stated that Russia welcomes the invitation sent to Argentina to become a member of BRICS and the intention of Latin American states to join the activities of this organization, noting that serious steps are being taken to expand the ties between BRICS and the South American continent.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Brazil, India, China and South Africa supported Russia's holding of the BRICS presidency, which will start in 2024 and will be held under the motto ,,Strengthening multilateralism for equitable development and global security’’.
,,We also expect to hold a full meeting of BRICS foreign ministers next year’’, the statement said.
