Josep Borrell spoke about the difficulties for Ukraine on the way to joining the EU

Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will be preceded by a ,,difficult battle’’ and Kiev will have to make huge diplomatic efforts to achieve the goal. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, during a speech addressed to the staff of the EU mission in Kyiv, broadcast by the press service of the European Commission.

,,We support Ukraine on two fronts - in the war and in fulfilling the criteria for joining the European Union. The country cannot get the full membership status ,,neither tomorrow nor the day after tomorrow’’, but we want to achieve this goal, because Ukraine could get the best long-term security guarantee’’.

At the same time, Borrell declared on October 1 that Brussels will increase military support to Ukraine after the US Congress passed a temporary funding bill a day earlier that omits aid to Ukraine.

Kyiv submitted the documents for EU membership at the end of February 2022. Four months later, the country officially became a candidate for joining the Union. This year, according to the European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, the Ukrainian authorities fulfilled two of the seven conditions for joining the EU – they reformed the High Council of Justice and the Commission for High Qualifications of Judges and adopted a law on mass media. Also, the Kyiv authorities enshrined Ukraine’s desire to become an EU member state in the country’s constitution.
