Moldova will organize a referendum for EU accession

A referendum on the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union could take place on October 20 this year, with the country's Constitutional Court recognizing that it is in accordance with the country’s basic law. The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, announced this recently.

At the referendum, as the head of state mentioned, the citizens will answer the question: ,,Are you in favor of Moldova's accession to the European Union?’’.

,,Our country needs ,,unity, the participation of every party and citizen’’ to guarantee the peace and well-being of Moldovans. Being united for a European Moldova, we will succeed in achieving our common goal - for Moldovans to live in peace, dignity and freedom in a strong European country’’, said Sandu.

According to her, joining the European Union will be able to considerably improve the standard of living of Moldovan citizens and protect ethnic minorities, and those who vote against European integration will ,,vote against peace’’.

On December 28, 2023, the Moldovan news portal NewsMaker reported an amendment to the law adopted in the second reading of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, which allows a republican referendum to be held on the day of parliamentary, presidential and local elections. The amendment was supported by 58 deputies out of 101.

Four days before, Sandu had announced her intention to participate in this year’s presidential elections. In case of victory, she promised to do everything possible to ensure that the country is accepted into the European Union.
