Trump Vows To End Wars, Free 'Hostages,' In Acceptance Speech
According to RFE/RL, Donald Trump gave the first speech after the assassination attempt on him, at the Republican National Convention, after he was designated a candidate in the presidential elections. In his acceptance speech, Donald Trump promised to end wars and restore US power.
Donald Trump addressed the Republican convention in Milwaukee for more than an hour and a half and described from the beginning the experience during the assassination attempt. Then a bullet whizzed past his head, hitting his ear.
"I had God on my side," he told the crowd
The Republican presidential candidate pledged on Thursday to end international crises and restore American prestige on the world stage, saying he could "stop wars with a phone call."
The former president painted a bleak picture of the world during the Biden administration, telling the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee that the planet is "teetering on the brink of World War III."
"Under our leadership, the United States will be respected again. No nation will question our power, no enemy will doubt our power, our borders will be completely secure”.
Trump also said he wants Americans detained abroad to be released.
"We want our hostages back, and they'd better be back before I take office or you're going to pay a very high price," Trump said, again without elaborating.
The Republican candidate has promised to build a version of Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system for the United States, even though the system is designed for short-range threats, unsuitable for defense against ICBMs, the main security threat to the US.
Donald Trump has a long history of inflammatory statements: he said shoplifters should be shot immediately, suggested a top US general should be executed as a traitor and mocked Democrat Nancy Pelosi's husband, who was beaten a hammer by a far-right conspiracy theorist.
But Thursday night in Milwaukee, he wore a white bandage over his right ear and spoke in a quieter, more relaxed tone. Donald Trump described the experience during the attempt on his life and called for an end to the discord, .
“Discord and division in our society must be healed. We need to heal her quickly. As Americans, we are bound together by a common fate and destiny. We rise together. Or we fall apart," Trump said.
