Disputes between Donald Trump and the state of California
California Governor Gavin Newsom has threatened to withhold federal taxes, amid reports that US President Donald Trump is preparing a massive cut to state funding, Politico reports.
,,We pay $80 billion more in taxes than we get back. Maybe it’s time to take action”, the Democratic governor said, citing a recent analysis by the Rockefeller Institute.
CNN reported that Trump is considering cutting off all federal funding to California universities.
The source said the US leader has used federal funding as leverage to impose his policies on the state before. In May, Trump threatened to cut off the cash flow if a transgender athlete competed in a women’s track and field event in California.
Earlier, hundreds of California National Guard troops were deployed to patrol downtown Los Angeles, in an escalation of the White House’s ongoing immigration enforcement efforts in the southern state.
The move was criticized by Newsom, who said local law enforcement agencies were more than capable of maintaining order in the city. He sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on June 8 asking him to withdraw the troops. The National Guard is usually called out at the request of a state governor, and the last time a president mobilized troops without a governor’s request was in 1965.
