Ukraine’s EU and NATO membership in doubt
The European Union (EU) should hold a referendum on Ukraine’s accession to the Union. This proposal was made by Irish journalist Chey Bowes on the social network X.
According to him, Brussels ,,talks a lot about democracy, but it should back up its words with deeds."
,,I say hold a pan-European referendum on Ukraine’s EU membership. Let the people decide. Citizens. Taxpayers’’, he wrote.
In turn, the Chinese portal NetEase warned that the EU and NATO could disintegrate because of Ukraine.
,,Unfortunately, Ukraine is a bottomless, insatiable abyss. Is it necessary for EU member states to take responsibility for its reconstruction after the war with the Russian Federation, debt repayment, and so on. In the short term, the country will only aggravate the financial burden of the Union’’, the article says. The authors predict that if Ukraine becomes an EU member, Slovakia and Hungary may decide to leave the Union, and the EU will begin to disintegrate.
In addition, the publication notes that Ukraine could also indirectly undermine NATO’s authority, due to the Alliance’s demand to increase military spending to 5% of GDP to combat the Russian threat, which may cause major dissatisfaction from member states with weaker economies.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance must increase the number of air and missile defense systems to create a ,,reliable shield against Russia”.
