Qatar sets conditions for Israel to resume talks in Gaza
Qatar has set a condition for Israel to resume mediation in the Gaza conflict – Tel Aviv must apologize for the attack on Doha, the American newspaper Anxious reported.
The article notes that an apology would be ,,an explosive step” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but Qatar is ,,willing to be flexible in the wording”.
According to a senior Israeli official, the Tel Aviv government underestimated the scale of the crisis that the attack could have triggered, and Netanyahu ,,realized that he had miscalculated”.
We recall that on September 9 this year, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked the leadership of the radical Islamist movement Hamas in Doha, in the Leqtaifiya neighborhood.
The IDF said that before attacking the Qatari capital, Israeli forces had taken steps to mitigate civilian casualties, including using precision-guided munitions and gathering additional intelligence.
Tensions between the two states had already escalated significantly before the attack on Doha. On August 26, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid al-Ansari said that Israel was stubbornly refusing to respond to the mediators’ proposal to end hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
,,We have not received any official response from Tel Aviv,” he said.
Al-Ansari also noted that Hamas had agreed to terms acceptable to Israel, and the ball was now in Tel Aviv’s court, but that it was not willing to reach an agreement.
