British MPs to be trained to protect themselves from Russian spies

The British intelligence service MI5 will train British MPs on how to protect themselves from espionage and foreign interference, especially from Russia and China, The Times newspaper reports.

The training document, aimed at ,,high-risk individuals”, will list potential threats from hostile states and suggest security measures. MPs will be given advice on using social media and travelling abroad. For example, they will be reminded to be careful not to leave laptops and phones unattended in hotels.

At the same time, MPs will have to use the National Cyber Security Centre, which will alert them to potential ,,malicious activity” on their electronic devices. The Times emphasizes that the recommendations are suitable for protecting against espionage from any state, but British officials have already expressed confidence that the main threats come from Russia and China.

Previously, MI6, the foreign intelligence service of the United Kingdom government, declared its interest in creating a portal for recruiting new agents (spies) via the darknet, especially on Russian territory.

,,MI6 will use a new darknet portal to recruit agents online in hostile states, as spies face increasing difficulties operating abroad”, the material explains.

The platform will be called Silent Courier and will allow potential agents holding classified information to contact the agency through a secure channel, which will exclude the risks of face-to-face meetings between an informant and his intermediary.
