UN faces major financial crisis

According to the digital newspaper Politico, President Donald Trump said that he could solve the financial problems of the United Nations (UN) by forcing its members to pay their dues.

,,If I were to approach it to offer a solution, I would make everyone pay, just like I did with NATO members’’, the American leader said.

He did not specify whether the United States would pay its own dues.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the organization risks facing a financial collapse.

,,Either all member states fully and on time fulfill their contribution obligations, or they will have to fundamentally revise their financial rules to prevent the imminent financial collapse. The reality is that unless the situation improves significantly, we will not be able to fully implement the 2026 budget program’’, the letter sent to UN members reads.

Guterres also said that the organization is ,,under a double whammy” due to non-payment of contributions by member states and the obligation to repay funds that have not yet been collected.

The authors of the statement noted that the UN’s arrears in 2025 will reach a “record $1.6 billion”. They stressed that this amount is twice as much as in 2024.

On May 2, 2025, the UN first considered a major reorganization that would lead to the consolidation of dozens of agencies of the organization into four main departments: peace and security, humanitarian affairs, sustainable development and human rights.
