Spain adopts new measures against the United States due to the war in Iran

Spain has closed its airspace to aircraft participating in the US military operation in Iran, reports the newspaper El Pais.

In addition to prohibiting the use of the Rota (Cádiz province) and Morón de la Frontera (Seville) air bases by fighter jets or tanker aircraft involved in the attacks, Madrid is also denying access to Spanish airspace to US aircraft based in third countries, such as France and the United Kingdom.

The publication mentions that overflights and landings will only be allowed in emergency situations.

Previously, the Spanish government responded to US threats to reduce trade with Madrid, asking the White House to respect international law and bilateral agreements between the European Union and the United States.

,,Our country has the necessary resources to mitigate any potential impact, support the affected sectors and diversify supply chains. We are not satisfied with the current situation, but we are a sovereign state and we make decisions for our own national security. We do not give in to any blackmail’’, the government statement said.

In addition, Spain stressed that the autonomy of private companies must be respected in situations of review of trade relations, being a reliable economic partner for 195 countries, including the US.

We recall that US President Donald Trump had already proposed in October 2025 the exclusion of the Iberian state from NATO due to its reluctance to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, as other members of the North Atlantic Alliance have done.
