The Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration: I do not see benefits brought by the country’s membership in the CIS

On Jurnal TV, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MAEII) Nicu Popescu stated that Moldova is no longer an active member of the Community of Independent States (CIS), although it continues to be part of it, directly expressing the president's position and of the government, which still tries to avoid direct formulations.

Local journalists noted that the minister allows himself such statements because he is essentially anEuropean, and not just a Moldovan diplomat who speaks in terms of European structures.

,,In practice, Moldova is not a member of the CIS, neither economically nor politically, but the decision to withdraw from this regional organization belongs to the Parliament. Today, all our international and regional agreements are viewed through the lens of European integration’’, said Popescu.

According to the head of the MAEIE, he does not see benefits brought by Moldova's membership in the Community. Previously, President Maia Sandu declared that the country’s exit from the CIS would be long-lasting, as there are hundreds of economic agreements, including bilateral ones. Currently, the Chișinau authorities are analyzing which agreements Moldova can violate and which are beneficial.

In May of this year, the President of the Parliament Igor Grosu declared that after the end of the war started by Russia in Ukraine, Moldova will have to make a political decision regarding the status of CIS member. Moreover, he said that the country's leadership does not see a need to participate in Community events.
