President of Latvia: There werethe Nuremberg trials, now there will be the Riga trials

Latvian President Egils Levits proposed the creation of an ,,international tribunal to investigate the crimes of the Russian Federation committed in Ukraine’’, according to the Lsm.lv news portal.

,,The Russian attack on Ukraine represents the biggest violation of international law since 1945 until now, because there have been no such aggressions with one exception. The exception is Kuwait. In the early 1990s, Iraq attacked and annexed Kuwait. But the international community, led by the United States, restored Kuwait's independence, and this violation was forgotten. Therefore, it is necessary to give a legal assessment to the aggression of the Russian Federation’’, said Levits.

According to the president, ,,the creation of a special court is necessary’’, is an idea that ,,gains more and more support’’.

,,Personally, I hope it will be established. The question is where. Perhaps it will take place partly in Ukraine, partly outside it. Riga may also be an option. There were the Nuremberg trials, now maybe there will be the Riga trials. If Russia is not held accountable, it means that the international community recognizes the admissibility of what the Kremlin is doing in Ukraine’’, concluded the Latvian president.

Previously, the European Commission came up with an initiative to create a special tribunal for Ukraine under the auspices of the UN, one of the objectives of which would be to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to justice. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, explained that the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague cannot try state leaders for aggression against another country while they are in office, as Russian Federation is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.
