Poland explained the reparations request addressed to Germany for the ,,stolen future’’

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki believes that German authorities should agree to Warsaw's request for additional reparations for damage suffered during World War II.

,,Our requests are as serious as the damage done by the Germans to Poland. Over five million Polish citizens died at the hands of the Germans. Every fifth victim is a child who did not live to see his tenth birthday’’, the politician emphasized. He also stated that at that time Germany actually stole the future of the Poles.

Warsaw also made a formal request to the US Congress for support in obtaining reparations. In addition, the Polish authorities discussed this issue with representatives of the UN, UNESCO, as well as 50 member countries of the Council of Europe, NATO and the EU.

The German government, however, considers that the issue of paying reparations to Poland is closed and has no plans to hold discussions on this topic. Despite this, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau promised that the state would continue to make efforts to obtain payment of debts from Berlin for German aggression and occupation from 1939-1945.

On December 28, 2022, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded with a negative opinion to the note of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated October 3, 2022, which was handed over to Warsaw on January 3 this year.
