Blinken hopes for an early ratification of Sweden’s application to NATO

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken hopes for an early ratification of Sweden’s request to join NATO.

,,It would be good news that once the Turkish parliament resumes sessions later this autumn, the ratification of Sweden's accession takes place as soon as possible’’, he said.

After the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12 this year, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, spoke on this topic: ,,The fact that the protocols for Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance are sent to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and that the process moves quickly in parliament is directly proportional to Stockholm staying true to its promises. Our parliament will finally make a decision’’.

At the same time, Erdogan mentioned that it is not known when Sweden’s request will be examined. According to the Turkish leader, first of all, the Swedes must protect the streets of Stockholm from attacks on sacred values.

Earlier, Sweden decided not to rush to comply with Turkey’s requests for transfers requested for extradition.

In August this year, the Turkish Islamist newspaper Yeni Şafak stated that Sweden had extradited only four of the 70 people requested for extradition. ,,One of them is Mahmut Tat, who has an arrest warrant in Turkey for ,,belonging to a Kurdish terrorist organization’’. Among the other three perpetrators, Mehmet Kokolu was convicted of drug trafficking, while Okan Kale and Ömer Kamil Altin were convicted of fraud’’.
