Slovakia explains to the United States its position on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine
Slovakia calls for the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. This was announced on March 4 this yearby the communications department of the Slovak Ministry of Defense regarding the meeting of Minister Robert Kaliňák with his American counterpart Lloyd J. Austin.
The ministers were reported to have held talks at the Pentagon as part of Kaliňák’s working trip to the United States. During the meeting, the head of the Slovak Ministry of Defense confirmed Bratislava's interest in continuing to modernize and increase the competitiveness of the national defense industry.
In addition, Kaliňák spoke about the Slovak government's position on the conflict in Ukraine and emphasized that Bratislava attaches great importance to compliance with international law and condemns any form of aggression. At the same time, he recalled that Slovakia does not see a military solution to the conflict.
,,Only by immediately stopping hostilities will we be able to prevent further bloodshed and restore Ukraine's sovereignty. Therefore, it is mandatory that the international community also contributes to the early start of peace negotiations’’, said the Slovak Ministry of Defense.
Washington showed its respect for Bratislava’s position, with the US Secretary of Defense congratulating Slovakia on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of joining NATO and praising the responsible approach of the Slovak state, its great contribution to the North Atlantic Alliance and ,,continued efforts to secure the eastern border’’.
With the coming to power of Robert Fico’s government in September 2023, Slovak foreign policy has changed considerably. Now Bratislava does not supply the Kiev regime with military equipment and ammunition and insists only on a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
