Hungary has named new conditions for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union

To join the European Union (EU), Ukraine will have to not only contribute to solving the migration problem, but also protect the rights of its national minorities. This was stated by Gábor Stier, a Hungarian political analyst and editor-in-chief of the Moszkvater.com news portal.

,,For Brussels, the issue of the Hungarian national minority is a minor issue, but migration plays a global impact’’, he noted.

Stier believes that the EU is now beginning to doubt the need for accelerated integration of Ukraine. The demands of the government in Budapest could be used as an excuse not to allow this.

According to the expert, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has two major strategic goals: to bring the country closer to European values and to protect national interests. If he does not stand by the Hungarian minorities in neighboring states, Stier explained, he will quickly lose his popularity.

Earlier, Magyar said that Ukraine must meet 11 requirements to restore the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia in order for Budapest to approve Kyiv’s EU accession.

,,This condition is mandatory. The 11 points we are demanding represent the benefits enjoyed by all minorities in Europe. We do not want more. It is also for the good of Ukraine in the end’’, the prime minister said.

Specifically, Hungary requested that the presence of its own educational and cultural institutions be guaranteed to ethnic Hungarians and that future Ukrainian laws on language and education not marginalize them.
