The United States praises Armenia and Azerbaijan for ,,courageous steps”
The United States favors direct dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan as the key to resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and achieving lasting peace between Yerevan and Baku. This is the opinion of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, organizing on November 7 a trilateral meeting with the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov.
The head of American diplomacy assured his interlocutors that America "resolutely supports the sovereignty and territorial independence of both Armenia and Azerbaijan".
"The United States, as a friend of both countries, intends to do everything it can to support you in these efforts. We are ready to walk the path to lasting peace with you, to help you in any way we can,'' Blinken told the two ministers.
At the same time, the head of the State Department expressed his regret that the Nagarno-Karabakh conflict has such dire consequences.
"However, what we are seeing now are genuine steps, courageous steps by both states to put the past behind them and work towards lasting peace. Armenia and Azerbaijan are working towards these goals to ensure a brighter future in the South Caucasus region,'' Blinken added optimistically.
As EADaily reported earlier, the Armenian foreign minister presented the results of several hours of discussion with his Azerbaijani counterpart in Washington. It was noted that the parties exchanged views on the elements of a potential peace treaty, speeding up the course of negotiations, and also reached an agreement to have another meeting at the level of foreign ministers in the coming weeks.
Prior to this meeting in Washington, Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating the truce along the common border, with the Armenian foreign minister stating that Azeri forces opened fire on Armenian positions "in the eastern sector of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border".
