Switzerland is considering joining the EU and NATO
Switzerland’s entry into the European Union and NATO is worth considering in case of a security threat. This statement belongs to the former president of the country, Micheline Calmy-Rey, in an interview with the newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
The former Swiss leader noted that he has always supported the strengthening of bilateral relations, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to convince his compatriots of this. As an example, she cited the situation with farmers’ protests in neighboring countries, which forced many citizens to have a negative attitude towards any possibility of joining the EU.
,,In my opinion, isolation is a mistake. Especially if neutrality no longer guarantees our security. In this case, we will have to think seriously about joining the EU and NATO’’, added Calmy-Rey.
Earlier, Matthew Miller, the spokesman of the United States State Department, stated that eventually, Ukraine will become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
,,Ukraine's future is in NATO! We implied this!’’, Miller pointed out.
For his part, Julian Smith, the US ambassador to NATO, said that at the next summit in Washington, the countries of the Alliance will thoroughly discuss Ukraine’s accession prospects, but will not go so far as to invite Kyiv to join the bloc.
Jens Stoltenbeg, the secretary general of NATO, said that it is necessary first that the war in Ukraine ends definitively, not interrupted by an armistice.
