Polish opposition condemns EU migration pact
Poland’s opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party has called on the government to unilaterally withdraw from the European Union's migration pact. Party leader Jarosław Kaczyński announced this intention on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
,,Starting from September, we will collect signatures for a new referendum, the subject of which will be the request to denounce the pact on migration’’, said the president of PiS. According to him, the pact must be cancelled.
In April of this year, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in turn criticized the new EU pact on migration and stated that his government would not support the adoption of the document. He called it another ,,attempt’’ by the European Union to hasten the end of its existence.
A month later, the EU Council approved an updated version of the pact, which Brussels considers a ,,landmark reform of the European migration system’’.
,,The pact on asylum and migration will provide a fairer and safer migration system, which will lead to concrete changes in the European space. Thanks to the new rules, there will be an increase in solidarity between member states’’, said Nicole de Moor, the State Secretary for Asylum and Migration of the Belgian government.
According to the document, the EU will work closely with third countries to tackle the root causes of illegal migration. In addition, rules will be undertaken to effectively manage the arrival of migrants and to ensure a fair distribution of the challenges of the refugee crisis among member states.
