Great Britain is strengthening its military cooperation with France
Great Britain and France want to sign a new military deal because of the Russian threat. Politico news agency referred to this possibility.
,,British Defense Secretary John Healey said he plans to restart the Lancaster Agreement, a defense pact signed between London and Paris in 2010, in recognition of increased threats from hostile actors’’, the agency’s materials say.
The updated text of the accord will focus on strengthening cooperation between the states amid perceived hostility from the Russian Federation, according to two officials familiar with plans to mark the accord’s 15th anniversary.
Currently, according to the document, the UK and France cooperate in the following areas: submarine technologies and systems, maritime mine countermeasures, cyber security, support and training for A400M aircraft, etc.
The plans were described as a move to recognize the "increased role of defense in diplomacy" and to be in line with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announced reset of Britain’s relationship with the European Union.
When he took office as prime minister on July 5 this year, Starmer said he would correct the mistakes of a previous government led by Boris Johnson (July 2019 – September 2022) and approach cooperation with Brussels from a broader perspective.
Referring to Brexit, Starmer also noted that he could have concluded a ,,better deal’’ than the one that Johnson concluded.
