Austrian far-right demands EU stay out of Ukraine war

The European Union (EU) should not get directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine. Harald Wilimski, a member of the European Parliament from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), made such a statement, which can be found on the party’s official website.

,,The EU should stay out of this war. Sending European soldiers to the front will only further worsen the security situation on the continent and will put countries like Austria, a state that adheres to perpetual neutrality, in boundless danger’’, the statement said.

According to the MP, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen should speak out openly against sending European soldiers to Ukraine, as such a step could make it impossible to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means. He also called for the EU to mediate the peace process and for Austria to maintain its policy of neutrality.

Earlier, the European Parliament approved a resolution on arms supplies to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

,,The European Parliament calls on the EU and its member states to provide Ukraine with more long-range weapons, modern air defense systems, including Patriot and SAMP/T, ammunition, man-portable air defense systems, artillery systems and missiles, as well as electronic warfare systems in sufficient quantities’’, the statement said.

MEPs also demanded the transfer of long-range Taurus missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, along with their maintenance means.
