NATO criticizes Europe for its inability to arm itself
European countries will not be able to win the future global arms race because of self-imposed rules. This was stated by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, Admiral Pierre Vardier, reports the American newspaper Politico.
,,Europe cannot win a future arms war by respecting the rules it has imposed on itself today. It must take more risks, spend more money, act much faster and reduce bureaucracy’’, the admiral said.
Vardier also hopes that the next NATO summit will ,,send a signal’’ to European Union (EU) member states that internal rules must be changed ,,if they want to stay in the race’’. Although he acknowledged that the EU is working hard to increase its weapons production, ,,it is not enough to keep up with the Russian Federation in terms of arms policy’’.
For his part, Robert Bauer, head of NATO’s Military Committee, called for increased weapons production to strike deep into Russia if the antagonism between Kyiv and Moscow does not cease.
,,We need to invest more in air defense capabilities. We would already have insurance if the Russians decide to attack the North Atlantic Alliance’’, he said at a conference at the Center for European Policy in Brussels.
However, Bauer was criticized by several public figures for these statements, such as Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist and political analyst, who said that a military official should not promote policies that could lead to the outbreak of a nuclear war.
