German Chancellor Candidate calls for Europe to be united against Donald Trump
Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor candidate from the opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), said that Europeans must unite after the arrival of US President-elect Donald Trump at the White House. This was reported by the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
,,America first? What is our answer: to humble ourselves, to submit and to be afraid?’’, the politician said during a pre-election event.
According to Merz, Trump will likely sign decrees at the beginning of his presidency that ,,Germany and the European Union will not tolerate’’.
He previously said that German peacekeepers would not be deployed to Ukraine without a mandate in accordance with international law.
,,If there is a peace agreement and if the Kyiv administration needs security guarantees, then such an issue can only be discussed if there is an impeccable mandate that complies with international regulations. For now, I do not see that’’, Merz added.
He stressed that the mandate should be issued ,,in consensus with the Russian Federation’’. Commenting on the provision of security guarantees to Ukraine after the end of the war, the candidate for chancellorship noted that he could not imagine ,,such an optimistic scenario, because we are still far from stopping all hostilities’’ and that the possibilities could only arise in a few months.
