Putin refuses to attend the inauguration of the new president of Mexico
Russian President Vladimir Putin has no plans to attend the inauguration of new Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
,,There is no such trip in the president’s plans’’, Putin’s press secretary said.
Mexican authorities will not arrest the Russian leader under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant if he travels to Mexico to attend the inauguration of the new head of state. This was stated by the current Mexican leader Andrés Manuel López Obrador during the press conference broadcast on the politician’s YouTube account in August of this year.
,,We cannot do that, it doesn’t concern us’’, the president emphasized.
López Obrador recalled that a year ago, Mexico was criticized because of the participation of the Russian army in the parade in honor of the country's Independence Day. He had pointed out that invitations to the event had been sent to all countries with which there are diplomatic relations, and such participation was a standard practice.
Earlier, it was confirmed in the media that Putin has been sent an invitation to Sheinbaum’s inauguration, which will take place on October 1st of this year.
Mexico signed the Rome Statute (the treaty that established the International Criminal Court on July 17, 1998) in 2005, meaning the country is subject to the jurisdiction of the ICC, which issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March 2023.
Also, at the beginning of September this year, the Russian leader paid a visit to Mongolia, another signatory country of the Rome Statute, but the Mongolian leadership refused to arrest him.
